China 5 and China 6a/6b regulations; Testing in accordance with China’s national emissions regulations. InMotion testing The EU’s RDE and WLTP The intent of the European Union’s new real driving emissions (RDE) testing regulations is to validate under real driving conditions emissions levels as measured in the laboratory. RDE testing involves the use of portable emissions measuring systems (PEMS) that is attached to the vehicle under test. Forum for Harmonization of Vehicles Regulations (WP.29) at its March 2014 session. If the WP.29 does confirm the GRPE decision, the WLTP will be complete and ready to be implemented by individual countries. BACKGROUND Regulations governing light-duty vehicle emissions and fuel consumption vary signifi-cantly across world regions and countries.

WLTP is intended to allow different regions across the world to compare pollutant and CO2 emissions as well as fuel consumption values. But while it has a common global ‘core’, the EU and other regions will use the test in different ways depending on their road traffic laws and needs. WLTP is a complex topic but an important one in terms of understanding what it takes to deliver a vehicle that meets emissions regulations. To aid in understanding this topic and SIMULIA’s role in it, we are offering a three-part e-seminar series entitled “ Leverage Simulation to Meet Emission Regulations in the Age of WLTP.” The Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), which is applicable across the EU as well as China, Japan, India, Korea and other countries, mandates the use of harmonised test procedures that can evaluate emissions and fuel efficiency in a consistently repeatable and reproducible manner. The Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) determines not only how to evaluate vehicle emissions and consumption but has also expanded to include how to report expected range for electric vehicles.

EU measures for end-of-series cars should allow for a limited number of unsold vehicles in stock that were approved under the old test (NEDC) to be sold the following year, that is until September 2019. WLTP, however, gives a far more accurate representation of a car’s fuel emissions and economy than the previous standards did. This should lead to efforts to further reduce emissions and improve economy, which is an important step in cutting back on CO2 and slowing climate change. Consumers need to be confident in car manufacturers’ emissions information when choosing which new model to buy.

An emission performance standard is a limit that sets thresholds above which a different type of vehicle emissions control technology might be needed. While emission performance standards have been used to dictate limits for conventional pollutants such as oxides of nitrogen and oxides of sulphur (NO x and SO x), this regulatory technique may be used to regulate greenhouse gasses, particularly In addition, there are two other regulation changes which are causing some confusion amongst company car drivers; WLTP (Worldwide harmonised Light-duty vehicles Test Procedure) and RDE (Real Driving Emissions tests). These were introduced in September 2017, replacing the New European Driving Cycles (NEDC). As a general definition, the WLTP is a series of tests required to certify that all new vehicles on the market abide by the new regulations. The objective is to ensure that all vehicles respect the rules on emissions, also called anti-pollution standards.

The 2005 regulation introduced the JC08 mode cycle which became fully phased-in by 2011 (vehicles were tested using 50 ppm S fuel for the 2005 standards). From 2018, emissions are tested over the WLTP test cycle. (WLTP) set out in Commission Regulation (EU) […/…]2, will replace the New European Test Cycle (NEDC), which is currently used pursuant to Commission Regulation (EC) No 692/20083 but no longer corresponds to present-day's driving conditions or vehicle technologies.

History of the WLTP and current status Vehicle emission regulations were first introduced in the EU in the 1960s and 1970s. At that time a first version of a European drive cycle for vehicle testing under laboratory conditions was developed. This test cycle3 included only urban driving and only to a maximum speed of 50 km/ h4.

It’s a new EU testing regime launched in September 2017. New cars are tested in a completely new way to give buyers more reliable figures on achievable miles per gallon (mpg) and carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions. Besides EU countries, WLTP is the standard fuel economy and emission test also for India, South Korea and Japan. In addition, the WLTP ties in with Regulation (EC) 2009/443 to verify that a manufacturer’s new sales-weighted fleet does not emit more CO 2 on average than the target set by the European Union, which is currently set at 95 g of CO Under conditions defined by EU law, the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) laboratory test is used to measure fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from passenger cars, as well as their pollutant emissions. What is WLTP and how does it work? WLTP, however, gives a far more accurate representation of a car’s fuel emissions and economy than the previous standards did. This should lead to efforts to further reduce emissions and improve economy, which is an important step in cutting back on CO2 and slowing climate change.
